How to get ready for a moving day?
In Soihtu student apartments, there are over 1,200 moves annually, so we certainly know that moving into a new apartment is often stressful and requires a bit of planning. With these tips, moving will be easier, and you’ll avoid extra hassle on moving day.
1. Take care of necessary agreements before moving
Check if you need an electricity contract, internet connection, or home insurance for your new apartment. In the apartments of Soihtu, electricity and internet are included in the rent, but home insurance is not. We recommend getting home insurance for protection against any damage.
Make sure you have also signed the tenancy agreement and paid any potential rent deposit. Soihtu does not require a rent deposit, but the tenancy agreement must be signed electronically before you can collect the keys.
2. Plan moving day in advance
Check with your landlord when and where you can collect the keys to your apartment. According to the Finnish Act on Residential Leases, the previous tenant has the right to keep the keys until 12 noon of the first working day after the lease ends. This means that when moving into a Soihtu apartment, you can get your keys no earlier than that.
When moving into a Soihtu apartment, you can order the keys to a key box or collect them from our service point during opening hours. Kindly notice, that you need to make the request at least three working days in advance if you wish to get the key to the key box.
3. Arrange moving help
Once you know when you can move into your new apartment, arrange moving help for that day. Ask friends or family members for assistance – if needed, you can hire a moving company to help or to handle the entire move for you.
Also, book a van or a trailer well in advance if you need one to transport furniture.
4. Pack your belongings carefully
Start packing your belongings well before the moving day so that you can focus solely on moving on the actual moving day.
If possible, organize your belongings by room and label the boxes according to their contents – this will make unpacking in your new apartment easier!
5. Moving day
When moving into a rental apartment, it’s good to remember that the apartment has been cleaned by the previous tenant. It’s usually more comfortable to settle in if you clean the apartment yourself once more before bringing in the furniture. It’s also a good idea to check the condition of the apartment at this stage while it’s still empty. Take photos of any defects and report them to your landlord. When moving into a Soihtu apartment, you will receive a link to the apartment card by email within a few days, where you can upload the photos.
If needed, you can make an electronic maintenance request if you notice anything in the apartment that requires fixing. Before doing this, familiarize yourself with the apartment’s maintenance responsibilities to see who is responsible for the repair.
Once the furniture and other belongings are moved in after cleaning, it’s good to take a break and thank your moving helpers, perhaps with some pizza!
