Broadband connection

Your rent includes Soihtu’s Broadband connection (1 Gbit/s) that offers a fast connection the Internet and all services included in the University’s network.

You can connect to Soihtu’s broadband from the network sockets that are located in Soihtu’s apartments’ every room. When you sign the tenancy agreement, you accept the terms of use for Soihtu’s broadband connection. Soihtu’s broadband connection is a branch of the University of Jyväskylä network. To use Soihtu’s broadband network, you need your own network cable, compatible with Gigabit speed (at least CAT 6) of the standard RJ-45. If you want a wireless connection in your use, or several devices, you can connect a router to the wall socket in your apartment. The device connected to the wall socket requires a registration on the first time of use. When the device is changed, a new registration needs to be filled.

Instructions on how to start using the Soihtu’s broadband

You can access Soihtu’s giga-speed broadband connection using a direct cable connection or a router. Choose the suitable option according to your needs; do you want to use the network on one or several devices.

“I only use one computer, connected using a direct cable.”

You’ll need:

  • Your own computer with a network cable port, compatible with cable standard RJ 45
  • Your own network cable compatible with Gigabit speed (at least CAT 6)

When connecting your computer for the first time:

  • Use your network cable to connect your computer to the network socket in your room.
  • If needed, you can consult a separate guide for the location of the network socket.
  • Open a web browser and fill in the online registering form that opens automatically (opens in a new tab).
  • The info you submit is approved within 24 hours, after which your Internet-connection will start operating.

“I need to connect several computers or devices and want to use a wireless LAN.”

You’ll need:

  • Your own computer
  • Your own network cable compatible with Gigabit speed (at least CAT 6)
  • Your own Ethernet router that is able to establish a connection with your computer and can connect to the wall socket via a cable that supports the standard RJ-45

When connecting your computer for the first time:

  • Follow the router’s user manual to connect the router to the network socket.
  • Follow the router’s user manual to establish a connection between your computer and the router.
  • Use your computer to open a web browser and fill in the registration form (opens in a new tab) that opens automatically. (Please note that your router is now the device that must be registered for the network.)
  • The info you submit is approved within 24 hours, after which your Internet-connection will start operating.

Soihtu wireless networks

Soihtu Housing provides a wi-fi connection to Internet for the tenants in furnished apartments (not in the furnished studios of the Kortepohja Student Village buildings A-C). The tenants of these buildings will receive personal instructions for login.

A public free wi-fi aalto (password: alvariinsa) is available in Rentukkatalo lobby, Soihtu Housing service point, Ilokivi Venue and restaurant Ilokivi.

August apartments offered
