Your rent includes Soihtu’s Broadband connection (1 Gbit/s) that offers a fast connection the Internet and all services included in the University’s network.

You can connect to Soihtu’s broadband from the network sockets that are located in Soihtu’s apartments’ every room. When you sign the tenancy agreement, you accept the terms of use for Soihtu’s broadband connection. Soihtu’s broadband connection is a branch of the University of Jyväskylä network. To use Soihtu’s broadband network, you need your own network cable, compatible with Gigabit speed (at least CAT 6) of the standard RJ-45. If you want a wireless connection in your use, or several devices, you can connect a router to the wall socket in your apartment. The device connected to the wall socket requires a registrateion on the first time of use. When the device is changed, a new registration needs to be filled.

Instructions on how to start using the Soihtu’s broadband

You can access Soihtu’s giga-speed broadband connection using a direct cable connection or a router. Choose the suitable option according to your needs; do you want to use the network on one or several devices.

Pay attention!

• When registering your computer to the Soihtu’s network, disable the automatic WLAN/Wi-Fi search function because that could prevent the computer from finding the cable connection.
• The device to be registered must be able to get its IP address and other settings automatically from the Soihtu’s network. This will usually happen if you make no changes to the Internet connection settings on your device.
• Only one of the two network sockets is active. If the device cannot find the network, try connecting the cable to the other socket. The active socket is usually the one on the left.
• Soihtu’s apartments are connected in a local area network Kortex, and your Internet connection is handled via this local network. This broadband connection requires no modem, just your own computer and the RJ-45 cable.
• You can connect with devices that are built for Ethernet use, such as your own laptop or Ethernet router. ADSL or VDLS devices (modems) are prohibited. They put too much load on the network and will lead to your connection being closed.
• The apartments in Kortepohja Student Village buildings F, H and J have a hybrid socket in addition to the traditional network socket. Familiarize yourself with separate instructions before connecting to the Internet in these buildings.

Soihtu wireless networks

Soihtu Housing provides a wi-fi connection to Internet for the tenants in furnished apartments (not in the furnished studios of the Kortepohja Student Village buildings A-C). The tenants of these buildings will receive personal instructions for login.

A public free wi-fi aalto (password: alvariinsa) is available in Rentukkatalo lobby, Soihtu Housing service point, Ilokivi Venue and restaurant Ilokivi.
