An oasis by the city
Jenna Simonen, who in 2026 is responsible for Academic and International Affairs in the JYY board, finds peace in nature – especially at the Korkeakoski waterfall. Located just a couple of kilometres from the centre of Jyväskylä, it is an important place for her to pause and breathe amid everyday life.
Korkeakoski is partly shaped by human, and the stream begins at Lake Köhniönjärvi. The flow is at its strongest after the railway tunnel, where the rushing water creates a striking sight. The powerful movement of the water attracts both visitors and photographers.
Originally from Vertaala, Jenna values closeness to nature. She first visited Korkeakoski with her friends at the end of upper secondary school, but the place gained a new meaning when she applied for media studies and captured the rapid waters with her camera.
Since then, Korkeakoski has become a place where Jenna goes to unwind on her own. “Water is an important element for me, and the sound of the stream is calming,” she says. By the waterfall, everything slows down and thoughts become clearer – which is why it is one of Jyväskylä’s hidden gems.
