Soihtu Resident Network Renewal – FAQ
JYY (The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä) and the Finnish fiber optic company Lounea have agreed on building a network connection for the residents of the Kortepohja Student Village, Soihtu Korttelikylä, and Soihtu Vehkakuja.
This change will not incur additional costs for residents, and the speed of the Internet connection will remain at least at the current level.
The connection will also include a cable TV service. The cost of the connection will continue to be included in the apartment’s rent. If desired, you can order additional speed and other extra services at your own expense once you’ve activated the Lounea service.
You will receive specific instructions for connecting to the network nearer to the rollout date. The installations for the new Lounea network connections are expected to begin around December 2024. The schedule for the changes will be communicated on a property and building-specific basis.
If technically possible, the existing connections will be kept active for a while alongside the new one. To switch to the new network, you will need to connect your interface cable to the designated connector as instructed. By registering for Lounea’s service, you will gain access to all the features of your connection, and you can order additional services if desired.
Current users of the Soihtu resident network are accustomed to a fast 1 Gb/s connection, and the connection speed will remain at least the same after the change. Some locations also have the technical capacity for higher speeds.
We are gathering information and answers to questions about the Soihtu resident network upgrade in this article. If you don’t find an answer to your question here, feel free to contact us at asukasverkkouudistus@soihtu.fi.
We will also update this page with new Q&A entries based on the questions we receive.
Updates about the network upgrade will be shared through Soihtu Tenant Info newsletters and on the soihtu.fi website. For more information about Lounea’s services, you can visit the Lounea page for Soihtu residents via this link (opens in a new tab).
Lounea is a domestic fiber optic operator and one of the largest national telecom operators providing fiber optic connections to consumers and businesses in Finland.
All installations are expected to be completed by January 2025. We will communicate property-specific schedules as they are finalized.
The university and JYY aim to support students’ daily lives and academic progress. The university’s wireless networks (such as eduroam) and study spaces in Soihtu Housing locations will remain unchanged.
Installation work will take place in some apartments. We will communicate the schedule for installation visits property-specifically well in advance. At that time, you will receive instructions on who to contact if there are obstacles related to the visit, such as pets. You do not need to be present during the installation.
You will be notified in advance about any planned outages in the network. Currently, no network outages are expected during the transition.
All tenants’ IP addresses will change when connecting to the new network. This should not cause problems for most users. By default, Lounea provides users with a private IP address. Soihtu tenants can access a public IP address at no extra cost by contacting Lounea’s customer service after registering for the service.
You can connect your computer or your existing Ethernet router to the network. You can freely connect other devices to your router.
Lounea follows the current rules and regulations for its network. The user is responsible for the security of their own devices.
The current Soihtu resident network will no longer be maintained after the transition. This means that the network will no longer be available in the future. You can easily start using the new network connection we have ordered from Lounea, which is included in your rent.
As long as you are using the current Soihtu resident network, follow the instructions on Soihtu Broadband connection instruction article.
Once you have activated the Lounea network, please contact the operator according to Lounea’s guidelines in case of issues.
Residents of furnished apartments have a special status at Soihtu. The apartments come with furniture and a wireless Wi-Fi connection provided by Soihtu.
Soihtu is currently upgrading the network infrastructure in all its apartments. Once the new operator has completed the basic infrastructure, it will be possible to offer residents efficient wireless network solutions enabled by it.
The pilot project for this will be in the RS buildings, where the goal is to implement a Wi-Fi 6 wireless network in the furnished apartments during January 2025. In other furnished apartments, the Wi-Fi network will be developed gradually, based on the pilot’s results and following a property lifecycle approach.
The Soihtu resident network is integrated with the university’s network management and external internet connection.
The university no longer has the resources to maintain the required infrastructure or the external connection for the resident network.
Transfer to the Lounea network means that we leave the JYU network, because the University will no longer maintain it.
The chosen solution will ensure exceptionally fast connections for the resident network users. The outdated network technology, which is at the end of its lifecycle, will be replaced by modern and energy-efficient technology provided by the operator.
Device installations will be carried out in the apartments of the following buildings:
- Korttelikylä D- and E-buildings
- In Student Village: R-, S-, H-, J-, A-, B-, C-, and D-buildings.
- In the Student Village E-building, installations will affect all apartments except the furnished ones.
Apartment visits in Korttelikylä will take place during week 51, from Monday to Friday, December 16–20, 2024. After the apartment visit, the connection will be available by transferring the network cable to the newly installed fiber optic terminal.
The schedule for other apartment visits will be finalized during the first half of December 2024. Other visits will take place in January 2025. Specific details will be provided for each location.
Please note that there may be changes to the project schedule that could impact the installation timeline.
