Our Urban Space

The Uptown, which stretches from the corner of Kirkkopuisto Park to Seminaarinmäki, is Eeva Halkosaari’s favorite place in Jyväskylä. Eeva, who works as a substitute Venue Manager, talks about the spirit of the Uptown, meaning the sense of community that has formed as like-minded people have gravitated to this compact area.

She first experienced the Uptown over 10 years ago during her freshman orientation, when her tutor took them to the bar Vakiopaine. “It is one of the most important places for me, the heart of the Uptown.”

The area also offers many other noteworthy places and events. “Katriina Vegan Restaurant, the theater space of Vakiopaine, the cultural restaurant Ylä-Ruth, Galleria Hoppa, and the vintage shop The Blue Train,” Eeva lists. “As for events, I recommend Yläkaupungin Yö in the spring, as well as Puistojuhlat, organized by Jyväskylä Festival, and the Pride event, held in the autumn, both of which take place in Lounaispuisto.”

Eeva describes the Uptown as an extension of the university community, mixed with other cultural elements. “It’s our own urban space.”

“Vakiopaine is one of the most important places for me in the city.”
