Soihtu Resident Network Renewal – FAQ

• In building F of Kortepohja Student Village, additional installations different from the other student village buildings will be carried out, and the schedule will be specified as the project is progressing. The specific timeframe for the apartment visits will be communicated directly to the tenants in building F.
• In Building E of the Student Village, installations apply to all apartments except for furnished ones.
• Apartment visits in Korttelikylä will take place during Week 51, i.e., Mon–Fri, 16 Dec – 20 Dec 2024.
• In Soihtu Vehkakuja and the MNOPKL buildings of Kortepohja Student Village, the implementation of the new network connection does not require apartment visits. Residents will be informed about the activation of the new network connection personally. The activations take place from Mon 16 to Fri 20 Dec 2024.
• In the furnished apartments of Buildings E and Q in the Student Village, no apartment visits will be made.

Please note: The project schedule is subject to changes that may affect the installation timeline.

 Installation work will take place in some apartments. We will communicate the schedule for installation visits property-specifically well in advance. At that time, you will receive instructions on who to contact if there are obstacles related to the visit, such as pets. You do not need to be present during the installation. 

All installations are expected to be completed by January 2025. We will communicate property-specific schedules as they are finalized.

The VPN service provided by JYU is the most efficient way for Soihtu tenants to access student network services during the transition period. The University’s network services will be developed to be authentication-based (instead of device address-based). This means tenants will be able to access the services by authenticating in a manner defined by the University, and the device’s internet location will no longer affect service availability.

In some buildings, network device installations will only take place in the building’s technical room (Soihtu Vehkakuja, MNOP KL buildings in Kortepohja Student Village). In these locations, residents may experience a temporary disruption in their apartment’s internet connection during the network operator transition. In such cases, it is recommended to restart your devices. If issues persist, please contact Lounea’s customer service.

All tenants’ IP addresses will change when connecting to the new network. This should not cause problems for most users. By default, Lounea provides users with a private IP address. Soihtu tenants can access a public IP address at no extra cost by contacting Lounea’s customer service after registering for the service. 

You can connect your computer or your existing Ethernet router to the network. You can freely connect other devices to your router. 

Lounea follows the current rules and regulations for its network. The user is responsible for the security of their own devices. 

But I don’t want the new connection; I want to continue using the old one. What should I do? 

The current Soihtu resident network will no longer be maintained after the transition. This means that the network will no longer be available in the future. You can easily start using the new network connection we have ordered from Lounea, which is included in your rent.

The Soihtu resident network is integrated with the university’s network management and external internet connection.

The university no longer has the resources to maintain the required infrastructure or the external connection for the resident network.

Transfer to the Lounea network means that we leave the JYU network, because the University will no longer maintain it.

The chosen solution will ensure exceptionally fast connections for the resident network users. The outdated network technology, which is at the end of its lifecycle, will be replaced by modern and energy-efficient technology provided by the operator.

The current Soihtu resident network will no longer be maintained after the transition. This means that the network will no longer be available in the future. You can easily start using the new network connection we have ordered from Lounea, which is included in your rent.

The shared goal of the University and JYY is to support students’ daily lives and academic progress. The University’s wireless networks (such as eduroam) and student facilities in Soihtu’s properties will remain unchanged.

Residents of furnished apartments have a special status at Soihtu. The apartments come with furniture and a wireless Wi-Fi connection provided by Soihtu.

Soihtu is currently upgrading the network infrastructure in all its apartments. Once the new operator has completed the basic infrastructure, it will be possible to offer residents efficient wireless network solutions enabled by it.

The pilot project for this will be in the RS buildings, where the goal is to implement a Wi-Fi 6 wireless network in the furnished apartments during January 2025. In other furnished apartments, the Wi-Fi network will be developed gradually, based on the pilot’s results and following a property lifecycle approach.

The old Kortex network has been shut down, and activating the internet connection provided by Lounea no longer requires Kortex registration

When will the installation of the new internet connection be completed?
